Environmental Concerns As the need for power
and water in the region increases, it is important
that we control the effect the industry has on the
environment, Bainounah Power Company have already
made a commitment to ensure that our emissions are
regularly evaluated to ensure that we comply with
internationally accepted limits governing Power
Station atmospheric emissions. Fortunately the
industry at large recognise this and over the years,
have developed new gas turbines with low NOx
burners, and more efficient gas management systems
are being fitted to steam generating plant with a
view to making power production more environmentally
friendly.
For us in the Middle East the tendency is towards
co-generation which means producing simultaneously,
therefore we have to consider both atmospheric
emissions as will as sea water emissions, as we all
know the MSF method of water production is based on
the process designed by nature itself where heat
from the sun evaporates water from the surface of
the sea which in turn rises to form clouds in the
upper atmosphere. The winds then move these clouds
around until they meet cooler air, which causes
consideration resulting in rain. As we know the gulf
lesion is surrounded by distant mountain ranges
which precipitates the rain long before it gets
anywhere near this area.
We in the Middle East have had to produce this
natural evaporation process in order to retake our
own rain artificially, in doing this the by-product
of the process requires that we return concentrated
sea water at an elevated temperature back into the
sea.
As a responsible company however, we recognise
the potential risks this introduces to the marine
environment and are proud to be associated with the
organizations supporting the Eco-Arabia conferences
for the protection of the marine and coastal
environment of the Middle East.
We as a company, will continue to ensure that we
contribute towards the protection of the marine
wildlife in the UAE, and that we encourage our
employees to become actively involved in local
environmental initiatives, we would like to take
this opportunity to express our appreciation to the
Shell organization, the World Wildlife Fund of
Nature, and the Environment Research & Wildlife
Development Agency here in the UAE, for their
contribution to Eco-Arabia 99. |
